In episode #13 of Interviews with Choir Leaders I chat with Astrid Jorgensen OAM, founder and director of Pub Choir.
If you haven’t heard of Pub Choir - where have you been?! Drop everything and get up to speed right now:
OK, now you’re all caught up, let me tell you a little more…
"With a show that is equal parts music, comedy, and beer, Pub Choir is a euphoric sensation that transforms a crowd of tipsy strangers into a legendary choir." (From the Pub Choir website)
Astrid is the ringleader of these events, and I sat down with her to find out how she does it. Choir leaders of all types will have something to learn from the success of Pub Choir.
Expect to learn:
How Astrid selects and arranges songs for regular crowds of 1000+ singers
Why large and small groups need to be rehearsed differently
What to do when the singers don't sing the notes you taught them
What to do at the start each rehearsal to get everyone feeling focused and present
Why it's important that EVERYONE is given the chance to make music - not just the professionals
And much more...

I got to meet Astrid in person at the James Cuskelly Summer School in Brisbane during January 2024. Astrid has the instinct for music, knows how to work a crowd, and has energy levels higher than a classroom of five-year-olds.

Update on my other projects
The Canberra Chordsmen had a very successful membership drive in February. We welcomed a bunch of great guys who were looking for a challenge. Now we’re gearing up for our regional contest in Gosford (part of the Barbershop Harmony Australia contests)
Strange Weather Choir is going to New Zealand later this year for the World Choir Games! It’s the biggest project we’ve tackled for a while, should be quite the adventure.
Mixtape Chorus had a strong Term 1, coming right out of the gate singing a Keane classic. Term 2 starts soon, and I’ve got to start arranging again… maybe some more Alanis Morissette?
Original Music - yes I’m still tinkering on electronic compositions such as this one. Ableton is an amazing tool for creating music, and it’s been fun exploring the capabilities.
Barbershop Judging - I’ve got my first barbershop judging assignment in Adelaide coming up in May 2024. I’m excited, and nervous, and feeling all of the feelings. I’ve got so much from Barbershop Harmony Australia, and I’m looking forward to give back to the singing community that has given me so much.
Until next time, take it easy, and go make some music!
